Like millions of other Americans, I owe a share of this country’s $1.7 trillion dollar student loan debt. The debate around the topic of student loan forgiveness is a personal one for many Americans, and if we are to be honest, it is a desperate one as well. The burden of our predatory outstanding student loan debt has been crushing for those saddled with it.

As we witness the official end of Donald Trump’s presidency and move forward with Joe Biden as president, millions of Americans are understandably celebrating. Not only does today represent a transition of power between administrations, but it also represents a reprieve from the four year assault inflicted on our nation and the world beyond our borders from an explicitly white supremacist Trump administration.

With full awareness of the social moment we live in, the inauguration ceremony of President Biden was steeped in symbolism that served to directly repudiate the nature of the previous administration. …

Over the course of the past week, the discourse around police violence against Black communities has once again taken the stage and vital discussions are being had because of it. Radical and necessary solutions like defunding and ultimately abolishing the police state have rapidly gained popularity, and we are even seeing the city of Minneapolis begin to take steps in that direction. …

Last year while reflecting on what I learned most during my most formative adolescent years at the height of the Black Lives Matter movement, I wrote:

“I learned that when it came to the right of human dignity that is inherited by each and every one of us when we are born into humanity, white people and other non Black people far too often have trouble recognizing that the right is extended to us as well. It was through this process that I found out what it meant to be viewed as a ‘problem.’ …

There are no two ways around it, Michael Bloomberg was the leader of a Jim Crow-esque regime during his time as mayor of New York City. Reminiscent of the vagrancy laws that were so central to the reaffirmed racial and economic order of the post-Reconstruction South, Stop and Frisk represents a violation of Black person-hood and liberty that has the express intent of stifling progress and keeping victimized populations readily exploitable.

In the same way those vagrancy laws kept countless impoverished Black men and women locked into the sharecropping and convict-leasing systems that were all too reminiscent of chattel slavery…

For the past six months or so it seems as though each week brings with it a new controversy (or two) for someone in the Democratic primary field, and this week was no different. The wildly popular podcaster and Ultimate Fighting Championship color commentator Joe Rogan expressed his likely support for Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders during an episode of his show. This alone was very unlikely to cause any issues, but problems arose when the Sanders campaign created a post on Twitter touting the support of the polarizing Rogan. …

2020 Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders recent CNN town hall has spurred quite a bit of controversy among some members of the Democratic base. When asked a question about whether or not he supports reparations for the descendants of American chattel slavery, Sanders pointed out the fact that the legacy of slavery has resulted in long-standing inequalities that continue to haunt us and that he would do everything in his power to close those gaps. While this sounds like a fine answer, some took exception with the fact that he did not immediately say yes to whether or not se supported…

2016 Democratic Primary runner-up Bernie Sanders officially announced his candidacy for the office of the President of the United States. Beyond all of the usual hand-wringing and smearing done by more centrist elements of the Democratic party, a new and more worrying line of attack has ascended from American political hell and figures to be front and center for the foreseeable future. The general idea is that fellow 2020 Presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren is “just as left” as Sanders and that anyone who chooses Sanders over her should be viewed as sexist.

The sexism charge against Sanders (and his supporters…

In the immediate aftermath of two Trump administration officials being forced out of DMV area restaurants by protesters from the D.C. chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America and “Red Hen” ownership respectively, voices from the political right and center have risen harmonically calling for civility from those on the left, or whoever else decides to resist the Trump administration directly.

While figures on the right demanding “civility” from their political rivals is nearly comical, pleas for “civility” from the center and center-left are infuriating. Senate and House minority leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi recently threw their colleague Maxine…

In the wake of the deadly Toronto van attack that claimed the lives of ten people and injured 14, details pertaining to the motivations of the attacker have begun to pour in. The apparent reason for what has come to be the largest mass-killing in recent Canadian history was the killer’s self-identification as an “incel”. “Incel” is a slang term that refers to an internet community of people, usually young white men, who are “involuntarily celibate” (which itself is a foolish concept). …
